  • Beat around the bush (bertele-tele)

I don’t have any time, so stop beating around the bush and tell me what I should actually do.

  • To hold out an olive branch (menawarkan perdamaian)

He held out an olive branch to by releasing 42 political prisoners.

  • Can’t see the forest for the trees (tidak bisa melihat keseluruhan situasi secara jelas karena terlalu sibuk terlibat didalamnya)

The congressman became so involved in the wording of his bill that he couldn’t see the forest for the trees; he did not realize that the bill could never pass.

  • Out of the woods (Situasinya masih sulit, tetapi semakin membaik. Bagian yang sulit sudah berakhir)

That pneumonia was serious, but Charles is finally out of the woods.

  • Barking up the wrong tree (melakukan sesuatu yang tidak akan memberikan hasil yang diinginkan)

She thinks it’ll solve the problem, but I think she’s barking up the wrong tree.

  • Nip something in the bud (Cegah situasi menjadi lebih buruk dengan mengambil tindakan pada tahap awal masalah)

Inflation will only get worse if the government doesn’t do something right now to nip it in the bud.

  • Between a rock and a hard place (Dalam kesulitan, dihadapkan pada dua alternatif yang sama-sama tidak menguntungkan)

He’s occupying the space he loves to occupy, where people are caught between a rock and a hard place.

  • As cold as stone (sangat dingin dan tanpa emosi)

He looked at me with eyes as cold as any stone, and I realized that he had no intention of helping me.

  • Clear as mud (tidak jelas sama sekali, tidak mudah dimengerti)

I guess I need to call a lawyer because these legal contracts are as clear as mud.

  • Let the dust settle (biarkan situasi menjadi tenang atau kembali normal  setelah  sesuatu yang mengerikan atau tidak biasa terjadi)

We should let the dust settle from the recent scandal before we make any major policy decisions.

  • Bury your head in the sand (Berusaha menghindari situasi tertentu dengan berpura-pura situasi itu tidak ada)

Stop burying your head in the sand. You haven’t been happy with him for years, why are you staying together?

  • Sell ice to Eskimos (Bisa menjual apa pun kepada siapa pun)

He’s a gifted salesman, he could sell ice to Eskimos.

  • Break the ice (Mencoba berteman)

Billy made a weather joke to break the ice.

  • The tip of the iceberg (hanya sebagian kecil dari sesuatu yang jauh lebih besar)

If congress doesn’t vote to extend the debt limit, a government shutdown will only be the tip of the iceberg.

  • Salt of the earth (Jujur dan baik)

My son is the salt of the earth. He works hard and always helps people who are in need.
