Perbedaan Another, Other dan The Other

Secara sederhana, kita mungkin akan mengartikan another, other dan the other adalah “yang lain”. Namun kenyataannya, maknanya jauh lebih kompleks dan penggunaannya pun memiliki aturan khusus. Mari kita bahas satu persatu secara lebih jelas :

Another

Another artinya “satu yang lain”. Misalnya : Balonku ada 4, rupa-rupa warnanya, ada warna merah, putih, kuning dan satu sisanya adalah hijau.

Another akan selalu diikuti oleh noun yang singular (tunggal).

E.g :

There are many apples in the bowl. Take one apple for you. Take (another apple / another) for your sister, and take (another apple / another)  for your friend.

Kita bisa menuliskan / menyebutkan kata bendanya (apel) dan boleh juga tidak perlu jika bendanya sudah jelas, jadi cukup menggunakan another saja 🙂

Other / Others

Other artinya “beberapa yang lain”. Dan selalu diikuti oleh Noun Plural (jamak).

E.g :

There are many apples in the bowl. Take one apple for you. Take (other apples / others) for your sister, and take (other apples / others) for your friend.

Kita bisa menyebutkan kata benda setelah other (other apples) atau cukup menyebutkan others.

The Other

The other artinya “satu sisanya”. Dan diikuti dengan singular noun (tunggal).

E.g :

There are five apples in the bowl. Take four apples for your friends, and take (the other apple / the other) for yourself.

Kita bisa menyebutkan kata benda setelah The other ( the other apple) atau cukup menyebutkan The others.

The Others

The others artinya “beberapa sisanya”. Dan selalu diikuti oleh plural noun (jamak).

• The other books
• The others book

E.g :

There are five apples in the bowl. Take one apple for you, and take (the other apples / the others) for your sister.

Kita bisa menyebutkan kata benda setelah the other ( the other apples) atau cukup menyebutkan the others.

Summary of “Other”

• I have three books on my desk. One is a dictionary. Another (book) is a novel. And the other (book) is a English reference.

• I have some books on my desk. One is a dictionary. Another book is about Biology. Another is about space. Other books are about English. And others are about History.
