Bagaimana cara membandingkan sesuatu dalam kalimat Bahasa Inggris? Misalnya seperti: dia sama tinggi denganku, lelaki itu lebih kaya dariku, atau kalimat lain yang sejenisnya. Nah, dalam ilmu grammar, cara membandingkan hal semacam ini dibahas pada Bab Comparison Degree. Comparison Degree dalam Bahasa Indonesia berarti tingkat perbandingan, maksudnya adalah sesuatu yang menyatakan perbandingan antara dua hal atau lebih dalam bentuk kata sifat (adjective) atau kata keterangan (adverb). Comparison Degree dibagi menjadi tiga macam perbandingan yaitu Positive Degree, Comparative Degree, dan Superlative Degree.
Positive Degree digunakan untuk membandingkan dua hal yang setara. Terdapat empat jenis pola dalam sub bahasan Positive Degree. Mari kita simak pembahasan berikut:

1. Pattern of Conjunction

Ada empat pola dan berikut masing-masing dengan contohnya:

(a) S + V + as + Adj./ Adv. + as + S + V

Contoh: Anna is 160 cm. Reno is 160 cm.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Anna is as tall as Reno is.

(b) S + V + so + Adj./ Adv. + as + S + V

Contoh: They work very hard. We work lazily.
Kalimatnya menjadi: They do not work so lazily as we do.

(c) S + V + the same + Noun + as + S + V

Contoh: Your warehouse is 100 meter squares. His warehouse is 100 meter squares.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Your warehouse is the same size as his warehouse is.

(d) S + V + the same + as + S + V

Contoh: Her mother’s dress is blue. Her sister’s dress is blue.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Her mother’s dress is the same as her sister’s dress is.

Note: Pola a, b, & d untuk kalimat (+) maupun (-) sedangkan pola b untuk kalimat (-).

2. Pattern of Preposition

Ada empat pola dan berikut masing-masing dengan contohnya:

(a) S + V + like + Object of Preposition

Contoh: My car is new. His car is new too.
Kalimatnya menjadi: My car is like his car.

(b) S + V + unlike + Object of Preposition

Contoh: Rani looks sad. Rina looks glad.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Rani looks unlike Rina.

(c) S + Linking Verb + similar to + Object of Preposition

Contoh: Kecantikan Ms. Zee seperti ibunya.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Ms. Zee’s beauty is similar to her mom.

(d) S + Linking Verb + different from + Object of Preposition

Contoh: Tingkah laku Ms. Zee tidak seperti ibunya.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Ms. Zee’s attitude is different from her mom.

Note: Pola a & b untuk kalimat verbal/nominal, pola c & d untuk kalimat nominal saja.

3. Pattern of Adjective

Ada dua pola dan berikut dengan masing-masing contohnya:

(a) S + Linking Verb + alike

Contoh: My sister is diligent. My brother is diligent too.
Kalimatnya menjadi: They are alike.

(b) S + Linking Verb + unlike

Contoh: My mother is kind. My aunt is unkind.
Kalimatnya menjadi: They are unlike.

4. Pattern of Variation

Ada tiga pola dan berikut dengan masing-masing contohnya:

(a) Using quantity in positive degree

S + V + as + many + Noun (plural) + as + S + V

Contoh: Lana has three umbrellas. Rana has three umbrellas.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Lana has as many umbrellas as Rana does.

S + V + as + much + Noun (uncountable) + as + S + V

Contoh: Lana spends 60 billions.Rana spends 60 billions.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Lana spends as much money as Rana does.

(b) Using that/ those of

As/ so … as + that/ those of …

Contoh: The son of president is brilliant. The son of common person is brilliant.
Kalimatnya menjadi: The son of president is as brilliant as that of common person is.

The same as + that/ those of …

Contoh: Cats of yours are cute. Cats of mine are cute.
Kalimatnya menjadi: Cats of yours are the same as those of mine are.

(c) As many as

As many as + number + noun

Contoh: Sebanyak sepuluh gadis cantik sedang menyanyikan sebuah lagu.
Kalimatnya menjadi: As many as ten beautiful girls are singing a song.
